The Jumento Van Basten project came about in 2005 from a personal need to experiment with the voice and word as a raw material for creating and experimenting with sound that would enable new approaches to the voice instrument, as well as to the word itself, and also could explore more comprehensive questions about life and society through random and experimental music. This work was intended in some way to use the word in a less conventional and more experimental way and also to create a performance that directly related to the public, but which did not go directly through the meaning, but could create new meanings from overlaps of loops and textures built and developed from the voice and the word.
The construction of these textures occurs spontaneously, freely and totally randomly, taking into account the environment, the moment and the sensation or feeling that it is intended to achieve. Often this construction takes place from a provocation to the public and from the prism of socio-political questions pertinent to the listeners, and the words and / or phrases chosen are, in some way, fundamental to support this provocation and questioning about of the society in which we live and of the problems inherent in human existence.
The improvisations usually rely on local and occasional backing musicians, bringing the ambient to experience a Randomic Speech with Noisy Music. But I've also performed solo performances or with some pre-recorded sounds, which help create a basis for the voice to spread sounds and words. In any case, the raw material of performance remains the voice, be it with sounds, noises and especially words.
I began this research on repetition and randomness with voice and word, about 20 years ago in the scene of experimental music in Rio, in places such as Plan B and Audio Rebel, as well as poetry events and performances. With this new record called “Meu Nome Não é Drøne!” (My Name is Not Drøne!) i intend to continue this research on the hidden meanings of words and the unconventional use of words, incessantly seeking within impromptu and experimentation some message encoded in the random and occasional sounds of words that create new meanings and unconscious sub-understandings about what we are accustomed to understand, and to rationally process.
